God created us to bring him glory. That is what our top priority should be. It’s easy to get lost in the weeds of how and why, but the long and short of it is just do it. It doesn’t matter how. It doesn’t matter if you want to. It only matters that “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord”. (Colossians 3:23)
At first you might think that God sure does sound like an ego maniac. What kind of being creates things for the sole purpose of making themselves look good? I can’t even take a compliment without feeling awkward. Upon further reflection though, OF COURSE I SHOULD SPEND EVERY WAKING MINUTE DOING AND SAYING THINGS TO BRING GLORY AND HONOR TO THE ONE THAT SAVED ME. Sorry to shout. That was a light bulb moment for me. It really shifted my perspective. Angela Duckworth gives this illustration:
Three bricklayers are asked, “What are you doing?” The first says, “I am laying bricks.” The second says, “I am building a church.” The third says, “I am building the house of God.” The first bricklayer has a job. The second has a career. The third has a calling.
See, I want to give glory to God…although sometimes
I have a hard time and probably don’t do it well. But when I remember the reason, “And we pray this in order that you many live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:10-14) It becomes I GET to bring glory to God instead of I HAVE to.
