It Ain’t About the Money | Season 4 Ep 6

Money...It isn’t the meaning of life or purpose of life

This week on Nothin’ But Fine, we’re talking about money—what it means, what it doesn’t, and how easily it can take hold of our hearts if we let it. Let’s dig in!

“Money was a divine essence that could embody itself in any concrete manifestation…Because that’s what money is: all things. Or at least it can become all things. It’s the universal commodity by which we measure all other commodities.” Hernan Diaz, Trust

Having money is not evil or sinful. But money is money and should be remembered as such and treated accordingly. It isn’t the meaning of life or purpose of life. What a depressing focus to have. If that is your driving force, oh the disappointment you will face. You will never be fulfilled, never satisfied. Like being thirsty and never being quenched.

Jesus says that you can’t serve two masters.(Matthew 6:24)
Warren Wiersbe says it is “most difficult to make progress while trying to look in two directions at the same time.”

The Jews in the time of Jesus measured blessings by wealth. God must be pleased with you if you had a lot. That’s how it had started out for the Israelites. God told them you do this, be obedient, then you will be rewarded. If you don’t do this, there will be punishment. We operate on that same model. Every day is treat yo self day. Like writing on your to do list a task already done so you can cross it off. (Keep the momentum going!)

Jesus worked really hard to change this narrative. In the parable of the rich, young ruler (Matthew 19:16-26) he says that it will be hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. Why? Because chances are the man will have a hard time choosing God over his wealth. Mark says it this way, “ How hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God.” (10:24)

The young ruler knew he was lacking, that he was missing a key component. That is admirable. But Jesus forces him to examine his heart and his priorities. He couldn’t let go of what he had. He was trying to serve two things equally, but when push came to shove…wealth and possessions won.

If you ask what you lack…be ready for God to show you and be prepared to make the adjustments.
