Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.  Psalm 37:4

To quote Inigo Montoya, I do not think that means what you think it means.  We think this verse means that if we love the Lord he will give us whatever we want.  That’s what the desires of your heart is, right?  The stuff and circumstances you long for?  Yes and no.  You see if you truly delight in the Lord you will spend time with him.  You will seek out the things that you know please him.  You will be reading your Bible and making prayer time a priority.  Suddenly getting up for church on a Sunday morning isn’t as hard as it used to be.  Time and opportunity to serve show up in your schedule.  So the question becomes will delight in the Lord change what the desires of my heart are?

Yes.

Look at the verse before.  Verse 3 says: Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.  Trusting the Lord seems like a given.  Doing good means that you are doing what is right…by God’s standards obviously.  To dwell in the land is to be in the place that God’s provision for you is.  Safe pasture?  Protection.

Let’s connect the 2:  If you are trusting God, doing what is right, dwelling in his presence and taking delight in him your desires are going to look different, more godly, and those are the ones God is glad to fulfill.

That doesn’t mean you can’t desire a new handbag.  Yes and amen.
