The coolest thing about Jesus…after the whole He died for our sins thing, of course…is that he is fully aware that we are going to mess up. We have a new rooster, Louis. He crows all the time. Happy? Crows. Disgruntled? Crows. Freaked out by the stupid bird dogs that sometimes circle the coop if left unattended? Crows. Demanding treats? Crows. There is no rhyme or reason. It is not a strictly sunrise thing.
All the crowing reminded me of Peter and how Jesus told him he would deny him three times by the time the rooster crowed. I have always thought that meant by morning. What I now know is that it could have been in 15 minutes but catch what Jesus says after his prophesy, “when you return”.
He knew Peter would fall short of the loyalty and devotion he proclaimed. He also knew Peter would feel horrible about it, weep bitterly, and do better. That is so encouraging to me. Jesus says, and I am paraphrasing here, when you are done messing up and feeling bad about it, you will come back to me and then you have to get back to work. He’s like “and we’re back”. And he loves us anyway. He still went to the cross.
